The framed star map, in detail
A framed star map is the chart of your night printed and framed for you, so it can go on the wall the day it arrives. The print is 260 g/m² luster photo paper. The frame is alder, a light semi-hardwood, 0.75 inch deep, in black, white or natural wood. The front is acrylic rather than glass: lighter on the wall, and it does not shatter in transit. Hanging hardware and rubber bumpers are fitted, so there is nothing to buy or assemble.
The sky itself is computed, not illustrated. Stars come from the European Space Agency's Hipparcos catalogue, corrected to your date, and are projected around the point that was directly overhead at the place and minute you enter, with the horizon as the circle's edge. The Moon and planets are placed for the same instant.
Which frame colour
Black is the safe choice for a dark chart such as Pure Noir or Midnight Navy: the frame disappears and the sky looks deeper. It also suits a room with black metal, leather or dark wood.
White sits best with paper-toned themes such as Classic or Cosmic Latte, and in pale, Scandinavian-style rooms. With a dark chart it makes a sharp, gallery look.
Natural wood warms the whole piece. It pairs well with cream and blush themes and with oak or walnut furniture, and is the one to choose for a cabin, a nursery or a study.
Choosing the size for the wall
A simple rule from interior designers: art above furniture should be about two thirds of the furniture's width, and hung with its centre at roughly eye level, 57 to 60 inches (145 to 152 cm) from the floor. Above a double bed or a three-seat sofa, that means 18 × 24 in or 24 × 36 in. On a bookshelf, a desk or a narrow hallway wall, 11 × 14 in or 12 × 16 in looks right.
| Size | Where it fits | Framed |

Getting the night right
The chart changes with the time: the sky turns about 15 degrees an hour, so use the real time if you know it. For a wedding, the ceremony or the first dance; for a birth, the time on the certificate; for the night you met, the hour you remember. Use the town or venue where it happened. If you are unsure, the custom star map guide explains how each choice changes the chart, and the designer shows the result live before you pay.

To keep it looking new, hang it out of direct sunlight and dust the acrylic with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid glass cleaner with ammonia, which clouds acrylic.
Framed star map questions
- Is it glass or acrylic?
- Acrylic (Acrylite). It is clear, lighter than glass and does not shatter, which matters for a frame that travels by courier.
- Can I see the framed version before ordering?
- The designer shows your exact chart and lets you pick the frame colour and size; the product photos above show each frame colour.
- Is the framed star map a good gift?
- It is the format that needs nothing more from the person who receives it. Our star map gift guide covers which night to choose and what to write.
