Most star posters sold as wall art are the same image for everyone: a pretty scatter of dots, or the constellations of the whole year squeezed onto one sheet. A night sky poster from us is different in kind. It is the sky over one place at one minute, so no two dates and places give the same poster, and the one you order could be checked against a planetarium program.
We compute it from the European Space Agency's Hipparcos star catalogue, correct the positions for the slow precession of Earth's axis to your date, and project the dome of the sky onto a flat circle with the point overhead in the middle and the horizon at the edge (a stereographic projection centred on the zenith). The planets and the Moon are placed for the same instant.
What can go on the poster
- Stars down to magnitude 5.5, about the faintest you see with the naked eye from a dark site, sized by brightness.
- Constellation lines and names, on or off. With them the poster reads as a map; without them it reads as a photograph of the sky.
- The Milky Way as a soft band, where it crossed your sky that night.
- The Moon in its real phase, and the planets that were above the horizon. A bright “star” that a guest remembers from a wedding night is often Venus or Jupiter.
- Your words: a title, a message, the date and place, set in the typeface you choose.
Choosing the look
A dark poster looks like the real night and is the most popular choice: Pure Noir, black with white stars, is the theme customers pick most. Dark charts suit rooms with white or pale walls, where they read as a window onto the sky. Paper-toned themes such as Classic (a near-black sky disc on white) or Cosmic Latte (a navy disc on warm cream) suit a bright room or a gallery wall of photographs, and look more like a plate from an old atlas.
Constellation lines help a non-astronomer find their way round the poster; leave them off if you want something closer to abstract art. If the date matters more than the place, put the date in the title and the place underneath; for a home or a hometown, do the reverse.

Sizes, paper and framing
