The honest timeline

How fast is it, really?

Ten minutes if you know the date. The slow part is deciding which night.

  1. 01

    Pick the night

Their wedding, a birth, a first date. Type the date, the time if you know it, and the town.

  2. 02

    Watch it render

The full sky for that moment appears in the customizer: every star, the constellation lines, the planets that were up.

  3. 03

    Add your words

A title and a line of text print under the chart. "The night we met" does more work than a card.

  4. 04

    Check your inbox

The PNG and PDF arrive within minutes at 300 DPI, sized for 11×14 or 18×24 printing. Christmas morning included.

The file is the same chart our printers use, so nothing is lost by going digital: same star catalogue, same constellation lines, same typography. Read more on digital versus printed charts or the shorter last-minute digital gift guide.

From file to frame

Print it today: home, pharmacy, or print shop

At home, tonight

Any inkjet on glossy or matte photo paper gives a good 8×10 or A4 at 300 DPI. Choose "fit to page", turn off borders, and let it dry ten minutes before it goes in a frame. Pharmacy-bought frames in 8×10 and 11×14 fit the file without cropping.

At a pharmacy or print kiosk, in an hour

Upload the PNG to a chemist or supermarket photo counter (most offer 8×10 and 11×14 enlargements on the spot; larger sizes next day). Ask for "no auto-enhance": the chart has a dark background that auto-correction tends to lighten.

At a print shop, for a proper poster

A local print shop will produce an 18×24 on heavy matte stock from the PDF, usually same day. This is the closest match to our own prints, and it is the route to take if a frame is already waiting on the wall.

The PDF is sized for 11×14 and 18×24 with the correct margins; the PNG is the same chart for kiosks that only take images. Both are 300 DPI, which is print-shop resolution, not screen resolution. Our one-page printing guide covers paper and colour settings.

Two people on the list?

Two charts for $30.00

Add a second digital chart in the customizer and the pair costs $30.00 instead of $39.98: a couple's two dates, both parents' wedding and a grandchild's birth, two siblings' birth skies. The saving applies automatically; there is no code.

Prefer a print?

Prints: is there still time?

Outside December, usually yes. Prints are made to order and leave the print shop within 2-5 business days. The gift hub has transit times by country, and the Christmas page shows the order-by dates once the season starts.

The line underneath

What to write on the chart

The chart prints a title, the place, the date and time, and the coordinates. The title is the part people agonise over, and the rule is simple: name the night, not the feeling. “The night we met” beats “Forever yours”. “Ava, 3:12 am” beats “Our little star”. A place name alone (“Lisbon”) can be enough when the date does the rest.

For a gift being given in a hurry, put the recipient's name in the title and keep your own message for the card; the chart should read as theirs, not as a note from you. If you are stuck, the Christmas page has dates and lines that work for each person on a list, and the Hanukkah page the same for eight nights.

Questions

Questions from people ordering late

How quickly does the digital star map arrive?
Within minutes of payment, by email, as a print-ready PNG and PDF at 300 DPI. There is no processing queue; the chart you previewed in the customizer is the chart you receive, at full resolution. Orders placed on Christmas morning arrive on Christmas morning.
What does it cost?
$19.99 for one digital chart. Two charts together are $30.00 instead of $39.98, which is the usual way to cover a couple, both parents or two children with one idea. There is no code to enter and no shipping to pay.
Can I still order a print before Christmas?
Prints are made to order and leave the print shop within 2-5 business days. Whether that still lands by December 24 depends on your country; the table on this page has the last order day for each. After that date, the honest answer is: give the digital chart now and let the print follow in the new year.
How do I give a digital gift without it feeling like an email?
Print it. Even an 8×10 from a home printer in a shop-bought frame reads as a finished present, and a pharmacy enlargement takes an hour. If there is no time for that, show it full-screen on a tablet and tell them the frame is coming; the chart itself is the point, and they will read their own date on it.
Is it accurate, or a template with the date typed in?
Accurate. Every chart is computed from the Hipparcos-derived star catalogue for the exact time and coordinates you enter, with the planets and the Moon phase for that night. You see the whole sky before you pay. 326 customers have rated it 4.9/5.
