In short: A birth poster from Gift The Stars is a print of the real night sky over a chosen place at a chosen date and time, computed from the Hipparcos star catalogue, with your names and a message underneath. A birth poster is a keepsake print of a baby’s name, birth date and time, weight, length and birthplace; ours sets those details under the real sky of the minute they were born, with that night’s moon phase.

The digital file is $19.99 and arrives by email in minutes. Posters start at $39.99 and framed prints at $79.99, in 11×14, 12×16, 18×24 or 24×36 inches, with free shipping to 35 countries; prints are made in 2 to 5 business days. The preview is free and needs no account.

What do you put on a birth poster?

Most birth posters list the baby’s full name, the date and time of birth, weight, length and birthplace, and many add a short line from the parents. Ours adds what no template can: the real star map for that minute, the moon as it was that night, and a star chosen for a future birthday.

  • Their name and birth stats

Name as the title, then the baby stats every birth stats print carries: the day, date and time, weight and length, and where they were born.

  • The real sky of that minute

Every star and constellation where it actually stood over the hospital or town.

  • The moon that night

The phase of the moon on the night they arrived, worked out for that date.

  • A star for a future birthday

The light Altair sent that night arrives around their 17th birthday; the poster rings it in the sky.

  • A line from you

“Welcome to the world, love Mom & Dad”, a verse, or nothing at all.

A real sky, not a pretty illustration

Most birth posters are illustrations: a drawing of a baby, some typography, a decorative scatter of stars. Ours is computed. Gift The Stars is run by Mayukh Bagchi, a PhD candidate in astronomy who builds balloon-borne radio telescopes, and every chart is calculated from the Hipparcos star catalogue for the exact place, date and time you enter.

So when they are older and look up from the place they were born, the stars they see are the ones on their wall.

Birth poster questions

What is a birth poster?

A birth poster is a keepsake print of a baby’s birth details: name, date, time, weight and length. Ours sets those details under a star map of the real night sky over the place they were born, at the minute they arrived.

What details go on the birth poster?

Their name as the title; the day, date and time; weight in pounds and ounces or kilograms; length in inches or centimetres; the hospital or city; and an optional line from you. You can add the moon phase of that night and a star whose light, setting out that night, reaches Earth around a future birthday.

What size birth poster should I choose?

11x14 inches suits a dresser or shelf, 18x24 is a common choice above a crib, and 24x36 is a statement piece. Sizes are 11x14, 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches, unframed from $39.99 or framed from $79.99.

Is a birth poster the same as a birth announcement?

Not quite. A birth announcement is a card sent to family and friends to share the news. A birth poster is a keepsake for the wall, with the same details (name, date, time, weight, length and place) made to frame and keep. Many parents order both, or send the digital birth poster as the announcement.

Can I print the digital file at 24x36?

The digital file ($19.99) is a 3:4 image that prints sharply at 12x16, 18x24 and up to 24x32 inches at any print shop. A 24x36 poster has a longer shape, so for that size order the print from us: we lay out the design for 24x36 and ship it free.

Is the night sky accurate?

Yes. The sky is computed from the Hipparcos star catalogue for the exact latitude, longitude, date and time you enter, the way a planetarium program does it. The charts are built by an astronomy PhD researcher. It is not an illustration or a template.

What if we do not know the exact birth time?

Use the closest time you know. The sky turns about one degree every four minutes, so a time within an hour still shows the same constellations in nearly the same places.

What is the star for a future birthday?

Light takes years to cross space. Altair, for example, is about 17 light-years away, so the light it sent out on the night your baby was born arrives here around their 17th birthday. The poster names that star and rings it in the sky. It is not an official star name or a registry; it is simply true.

Is it a good baby shower or new parent gift?

It is one of the most personal: the parents get the sky over the exact moment their child arrived. Because it needs the birth details, most people give it after the birth; the digital version can be scheduled to arrive by email on the day you choose.

Can I make one for twins or siblings?

Make one poster per child, each with the sky of their own minute. Two or more posters in one order get 10% off automatically.

How long does delivery take?

Prints are made to order (2-5 business days), then ship with tracking. Transit in business days: United States 2-5, Canada 2-5, United Kingdom 2-3, Europe 2-5, Australia 3-6. Shipping is free on every print.

Can I see it before I buy?

Yes. The designer draws your birth poster live as you type, for free, with no account. You only pay when you check out.
